WELD Project

Web-Based Electronic Design

Please note: This project was officially completed in January 1999. The research materials will remain online, but because of aging hardware and hardware-dependent software licenses, some of the demos have been taken off-line. These demos, built from 1995-1997, were proof-of-concept prototypes that showed the potential of Java and the Internet for EDA. Since then, Java has become a mainstream language and evolved to include many of the concepts that we demonstrated, and there are numerous advanced applications built upon this technology that are available online. However, if you are interested in anything on this site that has been disabled, please feel free to contact us.

If you are interested in our ongoing work, the GSRC Center will extend some of the work done in WELD.

Objective

The WELD project aims to construct the first operational prototype of a national-scale CAD design environment enabling Internet-wide IC design for the U.S. electronics industry. WELD's goals are dual. In the small, WELD will empower individual American electronics designers by affording them efficient desktop access to, and seamless interoperability of, the numerous, heterogeneous resources forming a national scale electronics design system built upon the National Information Infrastructure. In the large, WELD will reduce electronics industry market entry barriers to new entrepreneurs by providing a streamlined design development environment and a robust software distribution infrastructure.
