Using LaTeX

Despite the availability of elaborate commercial word processing application, there is no question that when doing technical work that includes mathematics, no existing word processing framework can compete with LaTeX. Miktex is free LaTeX software. To use it, you will need to be able to invoke programs on a command line. If you use Windows, we recommend using Cygwin, a package that offers Unix-like facilities within Windows. You can find instructions for installing Cygwin at http://ptolemy.eecs.berkeley.edu/ptolemyII/ptII4.0/cygwin.htm.

Regrettably, including figures in LaTeX documents is not as simple as one would like. The "best" mechanism is to create PDF files for the figures using any program than can print together with pdflatex. However, this generally requires installing Adobe Acrobat, which costs money. If you do not have and do not want to buy Adobe Acrobat, then you can print to EPS. Sample files for the two methods are found below:
